All About Antioxidants

Updated: Oct 26, 2018

The word antioxidants is thrown around all of the time. What are antioxidants? They are properties that keep products from being oxidized. I'm sure that didn't explain anything at all. So I'm going to explain it with the use of fruits. If you cut open a fruit and it starts to brown then that is oxidation. Avocados are probably the first fruit you think of! If you open a fruit and it doesn't brown, like a tomato or orange, then it is high in antioxidants.

Why does this matter? Your cells start the oxidation process when you begin the breathing process. Cells produce energy and the process also produces free radicals. The free radicals can cause stress and damage to cells and even to DNA. Oxidation can also happen from fighting off infections, and detoxifies the body of pollutants (such as smoke).

How does oxidation show up on your body?

  • Wrinkles

  • Fatigue

  • Memory Loss

  • Grey Hair

  • Decreased eye sight

  • Headaches

  • Multiple illnesses

How do you stop the oxidation from harming your body? Antioxidants! Back to the fruit we were discussing! Fruits and vegetables are great ways to introduce antioxidants into your body and boost your cells and immune system. What foods should you eat?

  • Blueberries

  • Strawberries

  • Blackberries

  • Raspberries

  • Mangos

  • Pineapple

  • Watermelon

  • Tomato

  • Cherries

  • Cranberries

  • Beets

  • Spinach

  • Oranges

  • Broccoli

  • Beans

  • Peppers

A plant based diet is rich in antioxidants and can keep your body healthy and your cells from oxidizing. You cannot get the benefits of antioxidants from taking pill supplements.
