Nutritional Yeast

Updated: Oct 26, 2018

If you cook any vegan dishes and you want to add a little cheese flavor then you're familiar with nutritional yeast. But nutritional yeast doesn't sound appetizing or like it is easy to cook with. To most people it is a shock to see that it can come in a shaker and it's flaky.

So enough of what I'm assuming all of you think about nutritional yeast, let's dive into what it actually is! According to Whole Foods, "Nutritional Yeast is a deactivated yeast related to brewer’s yeast, which is used as a fermentation agent in beer making. The yeast is grown on a food source — some brands use molasses — then harvested, heated, dried and crumbled. This process deactivates the yeast, and creates a wonderfully nutty, tasty and versatile ingredient." Nutritional yeast lasts about two weeks in a dry and concealed container.

The reason that it is called nutritional yeast is because it is packed with vitamins. You may be surprised to learn that it is full of B vitamins: Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine, Folic Acid, B12, protein, and fiber. That is a nutrient dense food for sure! Not only does this taste delicious and is full of nutrients, but it has been shown to help fortify the immune system.

According to Dr. Michael Greger, in a study done with one group of children taking a placebo and one group eating a dusting of nutritional yeast the children who had nutritional yeast were found to have substantially fewer infections and illnesses than those in the placebo group.  The children only took 1/8 or 1/16 of a tsp of nutritional yeast daily and the number of illnesses were cut in half.

Moreover, the children who were taking nutritional yeast that did get sick were only ill for three days as opposed to children on the placebo who were ill for up to nine days. So not only will this make some of your noodles creamy and cheesy, but it is also helping to keep you healthier and help to boost your immune system.
